Practical tips on how to stop the virus at home.

The UK Government’s message ‘stay alert, save lives’ in public places, is just as important at home.(6) 

General principles

It’s a good idea to

  • Keep fresh air flowing through your home.
  • Keep everywhere clean and dry.
  • Use hot soapy water or anti-virus spray to kill the virus.
  • Wear gloves when cleaning things.
  • Wash your hands properly and often (see below).

Kitchen

  • Shopping: items from shops and delivery vans are likely to have virus on them. Before storage, it’s a good idea to
  • wear gloves;
  • carefully clean items with warm soapy water or anti-virus wipes; and
  • wash your hands very carefully afterwards
  • Work surfaces and equipment: Make sure they are clean and dry before and after each use.
  • Sinks (and baths): Regularly pour hot soapy water or disinfectant down the plug hole.
  • Cloths: Use single-use cloths or paper towels. If not, wash cloths at 60C after each use.
  • Washing-up brushes: clean after each use
  • in a dishwasher, or
  • with detergent and warm water.
  • Dirty dishes: Don’t let them pile up!
  • Bins: To stop getting virus on your hands, use a foot-pedal bin. It also helps to wear a mask when dealing with rubbish, so you don’t breathe germy air.
  • Cloths: Use single-use cloths or paper towels. If not, wash cloths at 60C after each use.
  • Washing-up brushes: clean after each use

Bathroom

Coronavirus spreads easily when people share a bathroom. For example, the virus can hop from one toothbrush to another. Someone could get Covid-19 if they cleaned their teeth with an infected brush.

As a precaution, you could

  • Toothbrushes
  • keep each brush away from others; and
  • dip in mouthwash before and after use.
  • Electric Toothbrushes; These splatter gloopy spray that might contain virus. Afterwards you could
  • clean the sink carefully;
  • open the window; and
  • close the bathroom door.
  • Flossing teeth; Clean spattered specks of food off mirrors straight away.
  • Baths; Clean after each person has used it.
  • Showers; Keep them clean and dry before and after use.
  • Towels; Wash them at 60C and let them dry properly.

What has the sea got to do with it?

Spray gets everywhere when waves crash on rocks. The same is true when you flush the loo. Researchers discovered that spray from the toilet flush whooshes high in the air.(5)
This is bad news if
  • the last person to use the loo had virus in their poo; and
  • the next person breathes in virus and gets Covid-19.

What to do?

Scientists are still working on it. As a precaution, you could

  • shut the lid before flushing;
  • keep the loo window open; and
  • the loo door shut.
What Why
Close the lid before flushing the loo.
This reduces the risk of people breathing virus- infected air.
Use a clean piece of loo paper to lift the toilet lid.
So you don’t touch the germy toilet before touching yourself.
